Taxation and Funding

Contrary to a common belief, our Board pays county real estate taxes on its land just like any other land owner.  For example, the board paid approximately $9.061 million in real estate taxes for 2014.

The Board does not receive funding from the state.  Thus, no tax money is received by the Board and all funding for the Board’s operations comes from its leasing operations.

None of the net income obtained from the Board’s operations is paid to the State; rather each year all of the net income earned by the Board is paid out for the benefit of K-12 public education in the State.

During 2014, approximately $49.453 million was distributed for K-12 public education.  This amount includes approximately $5.437 million in county real estate taxes which funds public schools (about 60% of real estate taxes paid).
